Helsinki-based guitar player, Lauri Hyvärinen and Brooklyn-based percussionist Andrew Drury first met and played together in Finland in 2012 when Drury was on tour with Jack Wright. This recording captures their second meeting, in New York, at a session at Drury’s house.
In 2019 Hyvärinen’s label, Rypistellyt Levyt, will release a cassette of different music from the same session.
THE ISLANDS is a joint release of Different Track and Rypistellyt Levyt.

Max Bowen (electric guitar), Aidan Cafferty (upright bass), Tristan Cappel (alto saxophone, South Indian flute), Kate Derringer (electric bass), Marcus Elliot (tenor saxophone), Teagan Faran (violin–rehearsal only, not on recording), Ezra Gans (contra-bassoon), Mark Kirchenmann (trumpet, Director CAE), Jacob Rogers (percussion), Karalyn Schubring (pipe organ), Adam Shead (percussion), Celia van den Bogert (harp), Kaleigh Wilder (baritone saxophone, bass clarinet), Matthew Wildman (bassoon), Andrew Drury (composer, conductor, floor tom solo, cowbell). All performers also play rocks, 5 gallon plastic buckets, and pot lids.
Featuring pipe organ, contra-bassoon, harp, two percussionists, and more, spread throughout the cavernous Bethlehem United Church SPIRIT SPACE I (for Dizzy Gillespie) was commissioned by Ann Arbor’s Edgefest during Drury’s residency there in 2017. The performance took place on October 21, 2017, Dizzy Gillespie’s 100th birthday.
